Class Description: Step into a world where fire, smoke, and surprise become your collaborators. This five-day Electric Kiln Saggar Workshop invites curious makers to explore an alternative firing process that transforms ordinary clay into richly layered, one-of-a-kind surfaces. Designed for adventurous beginners through experienced ceramic artists, this immersive experience demystifies saggar firing in an electric kiln—no flames required, just creativity and curiosity. Students will learn how to build and prepare saggar vessels, safely incorporate combustible materials, and experiment with oxides, salts, and organic matter to create dynamic surface effects ranging from smoky blushes to bold, unpredictable markings. This workshop emphasizes exploration over perfection, encouraging playful risk-taking, thoughtful documentation, and personal expression. By the end, you’ll leave with a collection of finished pieces, a deeper understanding of atmospheric effects in electric firing, and a whole new appreciation for the magic of the unexpected.
Come ready to experiment, get a little messy, and fall in love with the alchemy of clay and fire.
