Description
Class Length: 6 weeks, 6pm-9pm each Wednesday, beginning November 11th
Skill Level: Intermediate to Advanced
Tuition: $220 (+ $65 materials fee)
Class Description: How does surface change the way we see form? In Surface & Form, we’ll explore the relationship between a vessel’s shape and the decoration that transforms it. Each week will introduce a different surface technique—including carving and texture, Mishima, slip trailing, sgraffito, colored slips, and wax resist—while considering how surface can emphasize, alter, disrupt, or enhance the underlying form. Weekly demonstrations will introduce techniques and approaches, and we’ll study the work of contemporary clay artists for inspiration and discussion. The emphasis throughout the class will be on surface development, thoughtful design, and finishing, rather than on learning how to make basic forms.
This class is open to both throwers and hand-builders. Students should have a foundational knowledge of at least one clay-building process and be comfortable creating their own forms independently. Bring your existing skills and ideas—we’ll focus on what happens next, when the surface becomes an integral part of the work.
Prerequisite: Students should be comfortable centering and throwing basic forms independently. This class is designed for intermediate to advanced wheel throwers looking to expand their design vocabulary and deepen their understanding of historical influences on contemporary ceramics.
Age Limitations: Ages 18 & Up
Supplies Included: Tuition covers 25 lbs of clay, use of studio glazes, all firings, and use of communal tools and equipment. More clay can be purchased as needed.
Additional Supplies: Students should bring their own throwing tools. Students must have their own bats, bat pins, and butane torch.
