Class Description: Discover how the great ceramic traditions of the past can inspire fresh, contemporary work. In this eight-week course, intermediate and advanced wheel throwers will explore iconic pottery forms from cultures and time periods that have shaped the history of ceramics—from the graceful proportions of Greek amphorae and the quiet elegance of Korean moon jars to Ming dynasty vessels, English slipware, Japanese tea ceramics, Arts & Crafts pottery, and Scandinavian modern design.
Rather than reproducing historical pieces, you’ll study the design principles behind them, including proportion, silhouette, function, and craftsmanship, then reinterpret those ideas through your own artistic voice. Weekly discussions will provide historical context and visual inspiration, followed by demonstrations and class time dedicated to creating modern interpretations of each tradition. By the end of the course, you’ll have developed a cohesive body of work that reflects both an appreciation for ceramic history and your own unique approach to functional pottery.
Prerequisite: Students should be comfortable centering and throwing basic forms independently. This class is designed for intermediate to advanced wheel throwers looking to expand their design vocabulary and deepen their understanding of historical influences on contemporary ceramics.
Age Limitations: Ages 18 & Up
Supplies Included: Tuition covers 25 lbs of clay, use of studio glazes, all firings, and use of communal tools and equipment. More clay can be purchased as needed.
Additional Supplies: Students should bring their own throwing tools. Students must have their own bats, bat pins, and butane torch.
