Class Description: Build it, shape it, alter it, and make it your own! In this five-week class, we’ll explore the versatility of coil building as a method for creating both functional and sculptural ceramic forms. We’ll move beyond the basic coil pot to explore how coils can be used to create larger, more expressive forms through stacking, shaping, altering, compressing, and sculpting. Along the way, we’ll consider how the process of construction can become an important part of the finished piece. Students will experiment with form, proportion, texture, and surface while developing their own approach to coil building. Demonstrations and guided instruction will be provided throughout the class, with plenty of time for individual exploration and feedback. This class is appropriate for students with some previous clay experience who are ready to expand their handbuilding skills and discover just how much is possible with a simple coil of clay.
Come build something that could never come from a mold.
Age Limitations: Ages 16 & Up
Supplies Included: Tuition covers clay, firings, and use of communal tools and equipment.
Additional Supplies: Each student will need their own basic ceramic tool kit to get started. We have these available for purchase at the art center for $30 but we recommend you purchase prior to day one of class when we are open to the public, otherwise please bring cash with you to hand to the instructor. Please also provide your own apron and a personal hand towel to each class (We don’t use paper towels in this facility and we don’t do laundry!) Your instructor will email you prior to class with other suggested tools.
